About EtchingRoom1
Kyiv-founded and Berlin-based artistic duo EtchingRoom1 has been working together since 2016, comprised of Anna Khodkova and Kristina Yarosh. Their practice encompasses prints, textiles, mosaics, and books, while conceptually resembling diary entries on the absurdity of everyday life. Their moods and reflections move between memories of failed love stories and the inability to resist the demands of productivity, the cult of success, and the pressure to have clear goals and plans for the future. All of this unfolds against the backdrop of a world in constant anticipation of catastrophe: overwhelmed by the noise of information, it is no longer clear whether to expect a nuclear explosion, the arrival of a messiah, or aliens, as in the exhibition's central work, "What a Wonderful Day in a Wonderful World."
POP-UP Exhibition
"For us, the term primarily evokes a short-term presentation of products, created as a news hook within a marketing strategy. But a pop-up is also something that suddenly jumps out or peeks through, and in the digital world, a pop-up window that appears over the main content of a page.
EtchingRoom1's works operate in much the same way: random images emerge against the backdrop of everyday order, drifting through our conscious and subconscious minds, appearing and disappearing with ease. A chance infatuation sparked by a chance glance at a party, longing for a pet you haven't seen in years, vampires — emotional ones, perhaps, or maybe we ourselves, so exhausted by intense emotions that we move through this world like the living dead, hoping to crawl into the individual coffin of avoidance as quickly as possible.
This exhibition is about something random and uncomfortable at once, something so familiar yet mysterious that it makes us ask, once again: 'But why did everything happen this way, and not differently?' And in the end, do all these thoughts and attempts at self-reflection even matter if there is always a small possibility that the familiar order of things will be interrupted by the arrival of aliens?"
